How to create a csv file to import or export contacts?

A CSV, or Comma Separated Values, file is created by exporting contacts from your email system.

After you have created a CSV file you will be able to upload your contacts to Gmail which is used to sync with your Motorola smartphone.

Contacts created on the handset will be saved to the handset as “Google” contacts and will sync with your Gmail account automatically unless contact settings for Gmail are changed.

Below you will find some of the most common email application where you currently keep your contacts. Follow the instructions below to create a CSV file from your email provider, then scroll to bottom for CSV import instructions into Gmail to sync those contacts with your handset’s Phonebook.

Hotmail

From the left hand menu, select “Contact list”
Select “Export” under the Manage menu
Click on “Export”
Follow the browser instructions for downloading the file
Remember the location where you saved the CSV file
Outlook 2003/2007/2010

From the Outlook main menu, select File => Import and Export
Highlight “Export to a file”, then click “Next”
Select “Comma Separated Values (Windows)”, then click “Next”
Highlight the “Contacts” folder, then click “Next”
Select “Browse” and specify a location and file name for the exported contacts
Click “Next”
Click “Finish” and your contacts will be exported
Remember the location where you saved the CSV file
Yahoo

Click on “Options” and select “Mail Options” in the upper left-hand corner
Click on “Contacts” in the left hand menu
Select “Import/Export” under “Management”
Scroll down to the “Export” section
Click the “Export Now” button next to Microsoft Outlook
Follow the browser instructions for downloading the file
Remember the location where you saved the CSV file
Outlook Express

From the Outlook Express main menu, select File => Export => Address Book
Select “Text File (Comma Separated Values)”
Click on “Export”
Specify a file name and select a location on your computer to save the file
Click “Next”
Select the fields you want to include for each contact
Click “Finish” and your contacts will be exported
Remember the location where you saved the CSV File

Thunderbird

Launch the Thunderbird Address Book
Select the Address Book you wish to export in the left-hand column
Go to Tools -> Export
Type in a name for the address book you are going to export
Select a location on the hard drive, such as the Desktop, that will make it easy to find the exported file
Make sure you change the “Save As Type” from .ldif to .csv and click Save
Remember the location where you saved the CSV file
